Co-sponsored by Arena Malaysia, the National Inter-Club championship is best described as the “mother of all swimming competitions” to all the kids training in competition swimming in Malaysia. This annual tournament is the 36th. edition.

Known officially these days as the National Inter-Club Swimming Championship for the President Cup it was at one time known as the Ong Kee Hui challenge trophy. Still, it’s best known these days as National Inter-Clubs or simply, President Cup.

Kids training for competition swimming get all excited the moment you mention National Inter-Club championship or President Cup. Each time the championship is held, one can expect anything from 800 to 1,200 participants hailing from practically all Malaysian states. It used to be that there were no qualifying times imposed but owing to overwhelming participation, qualifying times have been imposed but it’s also relatively easy for training swimmers to qualify.

Traditionally, it has been held towards year-end and currently remains to be so. This would coincide with the final school term holidays and is partly the main reason for the overwhelming response. It is an age-group competition but confined to only sprinting events. The events are 50m and 100m races covering all 4 swim strokes namely: freestyle, butterfly, breaststroke and backstroke. There are 6 age categories where you find kids as young as 6 or 7 competing right up to young adults in the open category. Naturally, there are boys’ and girls’ events.

Many upcoming top performers are present during the National Inter-Club championship. This is the arena where you could notice future talents en route to the nation’s elite swim squad. In recent editions, the championship had been hosted by Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Melaka. These serve as central locations especially for teams across the peninsular stretching from Perlis to Johore. Sabah and Sarawak customarily field strong contenders and they arrive by air.

A podium finish at the National Inter-Clubs championship is an attestation that you are the cream within your age-group as per national level. Furthermore, there is a 2-year spread for each age-group so when a younger swimmer within the respective age-groups takes the gold, he or she would be the cream de la cream!  Swimmers would be noticed whenever they achieve a podium finish. Another spectacle to marvel on is when swimmers of a younger age- group record faster finishing times than the best times set by the older age-groups.

All these, you will be seeing at the upcoming 36th. National Inter-Club Swimming Championship for the President Cup 2017. So for enthusiasts and supporters, head for the National Aquatic Centre at Kuala Lumpur Sports City, Bukit Jalil  24-26 November, 2017.
